Every September, National PACE Month shines a spotlight on the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)—a proven, person-centered model that enables low-income seniors to remain living safely at home while receiving the care and support they need. At Gary and Mary West PACE in San Marcos, this mission is at the heart of everything we do.
PACE is more than healthcare. It’s a lifeline for older adults who wish to age in place and for the caregivers—whether nearby or across the country—who worry about their loved ones’ wellbeing. Through coordinated medical, social, nutritional, and transportation services, we provide peace of mind and dignity to seniors and their families.
“PACE programs are truly unique because they care for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit,” said Rena Smith, Executive Director of Gary and Mary West PACE. “When a participant joins our program, they are not just receiving healthcare. They are becoming part of a community that uplifts and inspires them daily.”
Supporting Caregivers Near and Far
For many families, caregiving is a juggling act. Children may live in different states, spouses may be overwhelmed, and adult caregivers may be balancing jobs, parenting, and their loved one’s needs. West PACE bridges the gap. Families know their loved one is receiving consistent, quality care, whether at home or at our Adult Day Health Center.
“Caregivers often tell us they feel like they’ve regained hope once their loved one enrolls in PACE,” shared Mary Jurgensen, Community Engagement Director at West PACE. “They no longer feel alone in the journey, because they now have a team of professionals walking alongside them.”
Purpose-Driven Activities That Spark Joy
Beyond medical care, PACE places great emphasis on social connection and purposeful engagement—both of which are proven to improve quality of life and overall health outcomes. At West PACE, participants enjoy:
- Talent Shows, where seniors sing, dance, or share hidden skills—reminding everyone that creativity has no age limit.
- Flower Arranging and Art Projects, which not only boost fine motor skills but also foster pride and accomplishment.
- Men’s and Women’s Social Groups, offering opportunities for friendship, laughter, and meaningful conversation.
- Chair Volleyball and Functional Exercise, keeping bodies active while strengthening bonds through teamwork and fun.
- Daily Devotional Gatherings, where faith and reflection bring peace and comfort to those who choose to participate.
These activities provide more than entertainment. They create opportunities for seniors to experience purpose, friendship, and joy—factors directly tied to better health, fewer hospitalizations, and longer independence at home.
A Community Impact
The impact of PACE extends beyond participants. By reducing hospital visits, preventing nursing home placement, and supporting family caregivers, PACE programs save millions in healthcare costs annually while strengthening local communities.
At Gary and Mary West PACE, every success story affirms the vision that Gary and Mary West had when they founded the program: a commitment to ensuring that vulnerable seniors receive compassionate, comprehensive care that allows them to thrive.
As we celebrate National PACE Awareness Month, we invite our community to learn more about this innovative model of care. Together, we can ensure that seniors and caregivers in North County San Diego never feel alone on their journey.
